Favorite Artists

Yurie Sekiya
Tokyo, Japan
Born in 1987, living in Tokyo Japan. Most well known for her PeroPero characters, Yurie Sekiya has mastered the big sparkly kawaii eye!! Not only does she do illustrations, but she paints these lovely eyes on sofubi/vinyl toys and I so wish I could collect some of them. Her art as fabric prints goes perfectly with fairy kei or lolita fashion styles.
Takashi Murakami
Tokyo, Japan
He works in fine arts (such as painting and sculpture) as well as commercial media (such as fashion, merchandise, and animation) and is known for blurring the line between high and low arts. His work draws from the aesthetic characteristics of the Japanese artistic tradition and the nature of postwar Japanese culture.

When I was younger, I got to go to one of Murakami's galleries in LA. It was so cool to see all his weird sculptures in person. I like his vibrantly cute yet creepy style, and I still see his characters pop up from time to time in collabs like with Billie Eilish, Louis Vuitton, and he even released some virtual pets (of which I got two!) I really love how he makes old school woodblock style triptychs as well...I would be honored to have one on a big wall in my house ^_^
Junko Mizuno
Tokyo, Japan
Japanese manga artist. Her drawing style is often termed as Gothic kawaii or kawaii noir style.

Junko is definitely a childhood fav for me. I still don't know any artist who makes designs like she does. She has this pastel yet muted tone to her works which is instantly recognizable. I even got to see her my little pony design for The Pony Project when I went to the exhibition. Somehow I was in both LA and NY at the times of these gallery showings. Her most recognizable visual elements are little flames, sexy demon ladies, and her paisley designs throughout her characters.
Alfons Maria Mucha
Ivancice, Moravia
(1860 - 1939) Known internationally as Alphonse Mucha, was a Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist. Living in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, he was widely known for his distinctly stylised and decorative theatrical posters, particularly those of Sarah Bernhardt.

I recognize Alfons most for his thick outlines, delicate facial female features, flowing highly detailed hair, and divine art nouveau halos behind many of his subjects, Alfons Mucha is one of my favorite artists of old. His style is often replicated and still holds up so well today especially for advertisements and posters/etc.
Tina Yu
Tokyo, Japan
Tina is a Chinese-raised New York-based sculptor/artist. After developing an interest in sculpting in college, she decided to pursue her passion after getting a BFA degree in Graphic Design from Pratt Institute.

Oh my goodness, Tina Yu! Such an amazing sculptor, and she's beautiful to boot! She is so passionate about her heritage and encorporates themes and symbols from Chinese culture into her super cute, pastel, and dreamy sculptures. I truly wish to own one of her pieces some day!! She has dozens of videos of her creative process, go check her out!!!
Oliwabiu
China
I don't know much about this artist, but I absolutely love their old school y2k angelic mix-media style. They make animations, they make merch, they make physical/digital art and it's just so cute and iconic looking. They even draw the "button walls" that were common in the early internet days! Absolutely nostalgic.
Kira Imai
Tokyo, Japan
Born in 1977, Kira Imai is one of the most renowned illustrators of Lolita fashion, particularly her works for Angelic Pretty, where she creates illustrations for the brand's new print releases. Her work can also be found in the Gothic & Lolita Bible.

What can be said about Kira Imai's work...she is so iconic with her drawings of cute girls wearing lolita fashion. Her illustrations make their way onto fabric prints for dresses, and are just so lovely and delicate. The way she draws intricate ruffles on layers of dresses always amazes me, and her muted pastel tones are so lovely.
Teresa Chiba
Tokyo, Japan
Her designer toys are inspired by Japanese folk art. “Kibunanadon” was her first design toy - fish Kaiju toy - which was released in 2014. Inu-Harigon was her breakthrough toy design. It was self-produced and has already seen releases in a variety of colorways.

There is a style of toy that I love to look for and collect called "Sofubi" or "soft body" vinyl toys. They can be made in molds, then painted and they just have this distinct vintage look. Truthfully I like any artist that has a unique flare to their sofubi, but Teresa Chiba is a great example of the kind I like.
Ken Sugimori
Tokyo, Japan
Born 1966, Japanese video game designer, illustrator, manga artist, director[2], and co-founder of Game Freak alongside Satoshi Tajiri. He is best known as the primary character designer and art director for the Pokémon franchise.

At this point, Ken Sugimori's art is so iconic that you almost forget it was imagined and drawn by someone....his art just "IS" within our culture. I love old hand drawn art made for Japanese games, manga, or advertisements that are similar to Sugimori's style. The blocky bodies and faces, sharp eyes, and vibrant colors are all so recognizable. I'll be honest, I wish he drew more comics or other characters for us to see, but his focus is of course Pokemon and understandably so. His style is often mimicked by fans for fake-mon, which also give me so much joy to look at.
Kelly Reemsten
California, USA
Kelly Reemtsen is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. She was born in Flint, Michigan, in 1967, and studied fashion design and painting at Central Michigan University and California State University Long Beach.

I only recently discovered this artist, but I really love the power tools + beautiful 50's style dresses and pop art combo! I have to put her here too because there are literally some critics of her that say weird stuff like "You must hate men"....and I'm like, how did you even get to that conclusion??? As a home owner, I have to wield shovels, power tools, etc form time to time, so I can relate to these prints XD I also enjoy wearing lolita fashion which is even MORE fluffy and cute than these types of dresses.
Other artists I like:
Yoshitaka Amano - Final Fantasy artist
Hayao Miyazaki - My Neighbor Totoro, Studio Ghibli, etc.
Macoto Takahashi - epic shoujo artist
Yayoi Kusama - Well known for pumpkins with many dots
